The cooling system has heat exchangers (2 to 6) arranged in series in flow direction of a cooling air flow (11) of an air conveyor (9) of a fan wheel (10). A heat carrier is flowed through the heat exchangers as a cooling medium, for which a maximum permissible temperature is preset as limiting temperature. The cooling air flow arises ascending from the level of limiting temperature of the heat carrier conveyed through the heat exchanger. The last heat exchanger lying in flow direction of the cooling air flow is formed as a protective cover for the air conveyor by a lattice-like shield (12).
