<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display element which realizes transflective display with high brightness. <P>SOLUTION: A display element 5 includes an opposed board 1 and a TFT substrate 3 which face each other, and a liquid crystal layer 2 sandwiched between the opposed board 1 and the TFT substrate 3. The liquid crystal layer 2 can be switched between a transparent state and a light scattering state.
