The method involves determining contact of an electrically conductive structure (20) of a planar portable data carrier (10) by a user using a finger or a tool at multiple points of the structure for generating a characteristic capacitive pattern for the structure, where individual regions of the structure are galvanically or capacitively connected with one another. A measurement signal is produced for evaluation of authenticity and/or properties of the data carrier. Geometric shape of the structure is determined, where the structure is formed by hologram or metallic color. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a portable data carrier (2) a terminal for interaction with a portable data carrier (3) a system for interaction of a portable data carrier with a terminal.
