A personal protection system, said system comprising: a head band; a shell connected to said head band so as to be suspended above the head of the wearer; a fan disposed in said shell for drawing air into said shell; at least one nozzle connected to said shell for receiving air from said fan and discharging the air downwardly from said shell; a chin bar that is connected to said head band that extends downwardly from said head band so that said chin bar extend around and forward of the chin of the wearer; at least one control button that is mounted to said chin bar for regulating operation of said personal protection system; a hood that extends over said shell, said fan, said head band, said at least one post, said chin bar and said at least one control button, said hood having a transparent face shield; and fastening features attached to said head band and integral with said hood that cooperate to releasably hold said hood over said shell, said fan, said head band, said at least one post, said chin bar and said at least one control button so that said face shield is located forward of said chin bar.
