The device has rail vehicle-side controllers (12) e.g. drive controller, of rail vehicles (10) including rail vehicle-side interfaces (14) i.e. digital enhanced cordless telecommunications (DECT)interfaces, for a wireless point-to-point connection, for producing a communicative connection to a base station (16), and for exchanging data with the station via the communicative connection. The base station is independent of the rail vehicles. An availability of the base station in a communication region (22) of the interfaces is checked by the controllers via the interfaces.
