Washing and cleansing compositions comprise a mixture of (a) C10- 20 fatty alcohol sulphates, and (b) C10- 22 olefin sulphonates, the ratio of (a) to (b) being from 90:10-30:70. The cation of (a) and (b) may be Na, K, NH4 or mono-, di- or tri-ethanolamine. Optional additives include alkali metal borates (e.g. sodium perborate), carbonates, sulphates, ortho-, pyro-, tripoly- and meta-phosphates, silicates, and acid salts, e.g. acid ortho- and pyro-phosphates; magnesium metasilicate; and starch and cellulose derivatives, e.g. carboxymethyl cellulose. The compositions may be in solid, powdered, lumpy or liquid form.
