<p>A system (20) is configured to determine the displacement of a moveable member (22) relative to a reference member (21). A set (51) of sensors (50) is fixed relative to one of the reference member (21) and moveable member (22). An array of encoded words (48) is provided. The encoded words (48) define each position of the moveable member (22) along a first direction (23). Each encoded word (48) includes a plurality of indicia (45) and each indicia (45) is a multi-level logic unit configured as one of at least two states. The position of the encoded words (48) relative to the set (51) of sensors (50) defines a position of the movable member (22) along a second direction (24).</p> |
