The present invention relates to a washing machine, and to a method for controlling same, capable of efficiently braking a motor. The washing machine according to one embodiment of the present invention comprises: a cabinet which forms the outer appearance of the washing machine; a water-current forming unit arranged within the cabinet so as to form a current in wash water; a motor for rotating the water-current forming unit; and a control unit which outputs a command-torque current for controlling the motor so as to rotate the motor, and then decreases the command-torque current by a predetermined degree so as to reduce the speed of the motor and thus brake the motor.
