<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device of a hybrid electric vehicle, which is advantageous to the suppression of fuel consumption, while securing the responsiveness of front drive torque. <P>SOLUTION: When a coil temperature of a motor is not higher than a threshold temperature Tr, an engine 22 is early started at a time point when it is determined that a pedal-in speed Vaps of an acceleration pedal is not lower than a threshold speed Vr. Since a power generation current generated by a generator 24 is early added to a suppression current and fed to the front motor 18, a time delay of the drive torque B generated at the front motor 18 is suppressed to the minimum with respect to indicated torque A. When the coil temperature of the motor exceeds the threshold temperature Tr, the engine 22 is started at a time point when it is determined that a battery current flowing from a high voltage battery 12 is not smaller than a preset threshold current Ir.
