In the silent chain 100, an engagement starting point of a middle link plate 130 with a sprocket tooth 4 and an engagement starting point of a inner link plate 140 with the sprocket tooth 4 are set at positions where a guide plate 110 is avoided from contacting the sprocket tooth before when the respective link plates 130 and 150 start to engage with the sprocket tooth 4. Tensile rigidity of the guide plate 110 is set to be smaller than bending rigidity of each connecting pin 103 with respect to chain tension acting on the connecting pin 105. A back surface 121 of the guide plate 110 is configured so as to avoid the back surface from contacting a sliding-contact surface (7, figs 5 & 6) of a chain guide member (5, figs 5 & 6) with which back surfaces 141 and 161 of the middle link plates 130 and 150 slidingly contact. The silent chain reduces frictional losses and improves power transmitting efficiency and noise performance. |
