1321515 Sulphur and ferrous sulphate SHERRITT GORDON MINES Ltd 19 April 1971 [16 April 1970] 26213/71 Heading C1A S and FeSO 4 are prepared by reacting an aqueous suspension of finely divided pyrrholitic sulphides (FeS x where x < 1À5) with SO 2 according to equation (theoretical) where x = 0-3, the reaction being conducted at 150-250‹ C. and under a SO 2 partial pressure of at least 15 p.s.i.g. The pyrrholitic sulphides preferably contain not more than 1 wt. per cent Ni, Co and/or Cu and less than 5 wt. per cent Zn, and may be prepared artificially by thermal decomposition of pyrite. Finelydivided coal may be used as a catalyst to promote S formation, and the S may be isolated by hot filtration (300‹ F.) or solvent extraction of the resulting slurry. |
