A device 30 for maintaining a manhole cover in an open position, the device having means 20 for engaging with a surface 18, 19 at a perimeter of a manhole opening and means 40 for engaging with the manhole cover 10. There is a means 30 for maintaining a separation between the surface engaging means and cover engaging means. The surface engaging means may be a right angled or L-shaped plate 23, 24 and may be rotatably coupled to the separation means, the cover engaging means may be a clamp 42 which may rotatably coupled to the separation means. The device may also be shaped like a truncated triangle (figure 9a) with parallel clamp plates (903, figure 9a) which engage with the cover, and a base portion (955, figure 9a) which engages with the ground.
