A generally toroidal combustion chamber shape with a side injector is disclosed for an opposed-piston, opposed cylinder i.c. engine. Fuel is injected into the toroidal volume from a fuel injector in the cylinder wall. The top of each piston 40, 42 has a central region 56, an outer ring 52 and an inner ring 54. The majority of the combustion chamber is formed between the respective inner rings 54 when the pistons 40, 42 are in close proximity. The central region 56 of the top of the intake piston 40 may be concave to nest with the convex central region 56 of the top of the exhaust piston 42, as in fig.2; alternatively, the central regions (96, fig.7) may be flat. In one embodiment, fuel is injected from each injector a plurality of times with the timing between the injections such that fuel jets or clouds (212, 214, 216, figs.11-16) from each injection remain substantially isolated from each other.
