SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR MONITORING ANIMALS

A system (1) and method for monitoring the location of one or more ambulatory animals in an arena. A beacon (2) is placed at each of one or more sites in the arena which transmit wave pulses signal at a predetermined pulse rate. A tag (10) is attached to each of the animals. Each tag receives pulses from one of the beacons when the tag is within a predetermined distance from the beacon. Pulses received by each receiver (22) are counted and stored in a memory (26). Data stored in the tag memory are transmitted to a central processing station (20); which receives data transmitted from each of the tags and determines the amount of time each animal spent in the vicinity of each beacon over each of one or more time periods.
