The system (1) has batteries (2, 3) provided with voltage terminals (6) for supplying voltages to loads (7, 8), where one of the voltages is different from the other voltage. The voltage terminals are connected to respective charge controllers (9, 10) for outputting charge voltages to charge the respective batteries. The charge controllers are independently controllable and connected with a common generator. The batteries are switched in series, and one of the voltage terminals is formed as a center tap (5) between the batteries. The charge controllers are designed as proportional-integral-derivative controllers. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a power supply system.
