A method for structured communication comprises initiating an electronically mediated interaction pertinent to a communication transaction between specified parties; attempting to establish an initial context for the transaction based upon previous electronically-mediated interactions that include the initiating party; establishing a transaction type from a predetermined set of transaction types; establishing a defined role for each of the parties, each role defining bounds upon the activity of each party within the transaction; establishing a state information repository to be updated throughout a transaction, wherein changes in the state information are constrained at least in part based upon the transaction type; and providing a controller configured such that upon advancement of the state information from a first state to a second state, associated parties are engaged through a user interface operatively coupled to the controller.
