A method of manufacturing a large flywheel energy storage device-on site, to overcome transportation difficulties and therefore to increase flywheel energy storage capacity to multi megawatt hours. A spool / mandrel is manufactured in a factory environment, then transported by road, by special permit, to site. The spool/mandrel is used on site to wind the remainder of the flywheel on a prepared foundation. The winding process can be fibre / resin or cured preformed composite profile / resin. To provide a controlled environment, a temporary or permanent building is built to house the complete flywheel, a winding magazine system for fibres or shipping drums for composite profile, resin application system, a temporary rotating system, tension control and curing and heating and cooling systems as required. |
