<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve long-term reliability of a gap discharge element. <P>SOLUTION: A gap discharge element 100 comprises: an insulating base 1 having a first recess 4 on its top face and a second recess 5 on a bottom face of the first recess 4; a pair of discharge electrode parts 3 provided on the bottom face of the first recess 4 in such a manner that the second recess 5 is located therebetween; and an insulating lid 2 provided on the top face of the insulating base 1 so as to cover the first recess 4. Even if metal particles on the surface of the discharge electrode parts 3 are scattered around by repeated discharging, the metal particles can be attached to the inside of the second recess 5 to thereby prevent the presence of the metal particles between the pair of discharge electrode parts 3.
