PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a document information retrieval device and the like facilitating retrieval of a document by using illustrations of the document and explanations of the illustrations.

SOLUTION: In an extraction pattern registering process in a step S101, extraction pattern data for use in a retrieval process is registered in an extraction pattern information database based on an input from a user. In a retrieval meta-information creating process in a step S102, document data is read and illustration specification information and illustration explanation sentences are extracted from the document data based on the extraction pattern data registered in the step S101. Retrieval meta-information is created based on the extracted illustration specification information and the illustration explanation sentences and registered in a retrieval meta-information database. In a retrieval process in a step S103, a document information database is retrieved by using the retrieval meta-data created in the step S102 and represented to the user as a retrieval result.
