668,943. Free-wheel hubs for cycles. JUY, L. C. H. Feb. 7, 1950 [Feb. 18, 1949], No. 3169/50. Class 136 (ii). A free-wheeling hub incorporates means for locking the hub between the frame lugs and for releasing the hub when required for dismantling without removing the chain pinion, the hub being drivingly connected with the chain pinion carrier through a ratchet wheel, dog clutch or the like, whereby the hub continues rotating when the drive ceases by the pinion carrier being laterally shifted through the reaction between the co-operating clutch teeth on the hub and on the pinion carrier and means for retaining the clutch out of engagement when the pedals are stationary. A hub 1 is mounted on end cups 2 and 3, which rest on sets of ball bearings 4 and 5, on bearing members 6 and 7, which are kept separate by a spacing member 8. An axial spindle 10 carrying an operating lever 11 passes through the frame lug 17, and the hub 1, into a hole 12 in a stationary member 13 made rigid with the frame lug 14 by a threaded rod 15 and nut 16. To dismantle the lever is rotated to cause unscrewing of the spindle 10. The member 13 has a race for rollers 18, over which is carried a carrier 19 for the pinions. At its inner end the pinion carrier 19 has ratchet teeth or a dog clutch registering with a co-operating part 25 on the huh body The pinion carrier has a brake member 26 held by springs fitted inside a recess 28 The brake is released when the clutch engages. When pedalling ceases for freewheeling, the teeth ride over each other, and the pinion carrier is displaced axially bringing the brake member 26 into engagement with the flange 27 which is provided with sloping grooves to complete the disengagement of the clutch member. When pedalling recommences the brake member 26 brings the clutch members together, then they move into full engagement and the brake member returns to its inoperative position. |
