<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cathode catalyst for a solid polymer fuel cell for which platinum is not used and which is inexpensive due to no restriction of reserved resources, and has excellent characteristics as the electrode catalyst for a fuel cell. <P>SOLUTION: The cathode catalyst for a solid polymer fuel cell contains a bronze compound having a general formula (1): AxMyOz, of which M stands for transition metal, A for metal, and M takes at least a plurality of kinds of mixed valences which consist of highest obtainable oxidation numbers and small oxidation numbers reduced from them, and A has an unfixed ratio composition and when y equals to 1, z can be decided according to a highest valence status which the transition metal M can take and x is more than 0.1 and less than 1.
