A tyre tread reinforcement located between the carcase 1 and tread 8 comprises at least one circumferentially extending ply (5 or 7) of mutually parallel steel cords which are coated with resilient material and disposed at an angle between 0 and 30 degrees to the median plane, and at least one circumferentially extending sheet adjacent to and substantially co-extensive with the steel cord ply, the sheet being made of a synthetic organic polymer of high molecular weight and having a substantially greater shear and tensile strength than that of the tread rubber. As shown two rubberized steel cord plies 5, 7, the cords of which are wound circumferentially from one or more lengths, have a nylon sheet 6 sandwiched therebetween. In alternative arrangements the plies 5, 7 may each comprise a plurality of parallel short lengths extending from side to side at an angle of 20 degrees to' the median plane and additional steel cord plies may be provided with or without separating sheets 6. A sheet 6 may be provided between the steel cord plies and the tread 8 or the carcase 1. The carcase 1 may comprise two plies 2 of parallel rubberized textile cords the cords in each ply being disposed at an angle between 70 degrees and 90 degrees to the median plane and the cords of one ply being inclined oppositely to the cords of the other ply. Thin rubber sheets 4 and 9 may be disposed to sandwich the textile plies 2 therebetween. |
