In an oxo process for the production of aldehydes and alcohols by the reaction of carbon monoxide and hydrogen with olefinic hydrocarbon compounds in the presence of cobalt carbonyl compounds in a homogeneous phase the catalyst is extracted by treating the hydroformylation product, at 40 DEG C.-160 DEG C. and 10-150 kg/sq. cm. in the presence of water and of a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, with a metal of the 1st or 2nd Group of the Periodic Table, or a compound of such a metal, in at least a slight stoichiometric excess with respect to the cobalt present, to form a water-soluble compound in which all of the cobalt is present in the anionic part of the molecule, treating the aqueous extract with a mineral acid to liberate the whole of the cobalt as hydrocarbonyl and dissolving the cobalt hydrocarbonyl in the olefine to be subjected to the hydroformylation process. The preferred metals of Group 1 and 2 are lithium, sodium, potassium, beryllium, magnesium, calcium, strontium, barium, zinc and cadmium and they may be employed in the form of the metal, oxide, hydroxide, carbonate, mineral or organic salt or a natural ore. The metal or metal compound may be used in a fixed bed, in suspension or in the form of a solution in an aqueous or organic medium. |
