956,422. Presses. E. SIEMPELKAMP. Jan. 11, 1962 [June 29, 1961], No. 1050/62. Headings B5A, B5F and B5N. A press with heated platens, for use in forming fibreboards, plywood panels &c., comprises an upper fixed platen 1 and a lower movable platen 2, each comprising plates 3 and 4 joined by ribs 5, and each of the platens being attached to an additional heating plate, as shown in Fig. 1, and surrounded by a heat insulation hood 15. The upper and lower plates 3 and 4 of an individual platen are maintained at the same temperature in order to eliminate differential expansion between them thus preserving their plane-parallelism and avoiding any distortion of the platen as a whole. In one embodiment the same cooling fluid is circulated through each of the plates 3 and 4, by a rotary pump 9, the number of passages 8 in each plate being adjusted to ensure the desired equality of temperature (see Fig. 3), whilst in another embodiment each plate is heated independently to the same temperature (see Fig. 4, not shown). In a further modification (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown), the upper plate 3, of platen 1, and the lower plate 4, of platen 2, are traversed by the same heating medium and are connected parallel with both the heating plates 6 in the heating system 9, whilst plate 4 of platen 1 and plate 3 of platen 2 contain no heating or cooling passages. |
