BACKLIGHT UNIT, AND IMAGE DISPLAY USING THE SAME

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress luminance deterioration of an effective display-area edge-portion and reduce luminance unevenness in a backlight unit wherein the light emission plane of a light guide plate is smaller than the effective display area of a liquid crystal panel.

SOLUTION: The backlight unit is provided with an LED (2) and a light guide plate which guides light from the LED (2) to a liquid crystal panel (6) side, and is constructed so as to emit light from a light emission plane (1b) opposed to the liquid crystal panel (6) of the light guide plate (1) toward the liquid crystal panel (6). Then, in the backlight unit, the area of the light emission plane (1b) of the light guide plate (6) is smaller than the effective display area of the liquid crystal panel (6), and a prescribed shape (101) for diffusing or dispersing light is formed on the lateral side perpendicular to the light emission plane (1b) of the light guide plate (1) and/or at the edge portion near the lateral side of the light emission plane.
