Provided is a negative electrode active material whereby it becomes possible to prevent the occurrence of the reaction of an electrolytic solution on the surface of the negative electrode active material and the deterioration in battery capacity, and in which a coating film is formed to achieve the reduction in resistance. A negative electrode active material (90) for a lithium ion secondary battery comprises: a carbon material (92) which can store and release lithium reversibly; an amorphous carbon film (94) which coats the surface of the carbon material; and a coating film (96) which coats the surface of the amorphous carbon film and contains a phosphoric acid compound.
