A mechanical resonator for a timepiece comprises two branches 1, 2 which oscillate in phase opposition, at least one of the branches being formed with a cavity 12 to receive a compensating device comprising a chamber 13 containing a mass 16, 18 which is free to move in the chamber and thus compensate at least partially for the variations of the frequency of the resonator due to changes of its orientation. The resonator is secured by screws 4 to a support and the branches have holes 10 to reduce their weight. Masses 5, 6 are secured to the ends of the branches and cooperate with a coil 7 to form an electromagnetic transducer for maintaining the oscillations of the resonator which is made of metal. A rotatable eccentric member 11 is provided for manual fine adjustment of the resonator frequency. Since the mass 16, 18 is free to move in the chamber 13, the compensating device automatically corrects the resonator frequency for changes in position of the resonator by allowing the centre of gravity of the mass to move according to the change in position. In one form the mass 16 comprises a ruby or sapphire ball having a bore 17 in which a plug 18 of gold is inserted, the ball being surrounded by a viscous fluid. Several modifications of the compensating device are described and the branches may each be provided with a compensating device and a member 11.
