[Also in Division F2] An inking roller is rotated by contact with further inking rollers and is so constructed that the rotary motion is partially converted into axially reciprocating movement. Figs. 2 and 3 are longitudinal sections through each half of the roller which is in rolling contact with a further roller 4. The roller comprises two stationary spaced-apart colinear spindles 6 supported in a frame 8; an outer sleeve 10 rotating in contact with the roller 4, and an inner sleeve 12 rigidly fixed to the outer sleeve 10. Fixed to the spindles 6 and extending between them is a stationary body 18 on which is mounted various gears; the rotational movement of outer sleeve 10 is transmitted through a cup-shaped tubular member 15 and a key element 16 to bearing 28. This bearing causes tubular member 22 to rotate which in turn causes rotation of a bevel gear 24 mounted on member 22; gear 24 actuates a series of further spur and bevel gears 30, 33, 41, 37, 39 and 44, the last of these causing a second tubular member 40 to rotate. A row of cam followers 46 mounted on this member 40 interact with cam surface 47 carried on the inner surface of inner sleeve 12 (also Figs. 4, 5, not shown), the cam surface being designed so as to reciprocate the outer and inner sleeves 10, 12 along the axes of spindles 6. The gear means are preferably selected so as to effect a speed reduction. |
