<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technology that more accurately detects jam during paper conveyance in a printing device for printing an image on a recording medium to be conveyed while moving a carriage in a scanning manner. <P>SOLUTION: A printing device executes jam detection operation on the assumption that jam-detection-operation start conditions are satisfied when an accumulated paper feed amount of paper P reaches a threshold Xth obtained by adding a prescribed margin amount Xm to an accumulated paper feed amount Xe corresponding to a conveying distance to a discharge mechanism 40 (step S104). In the jam detection operation, a carriage is moved in a state of not discharging ink (steps S122, S124) in a reciprocating and scanning maner so as to execute jam detection on the basis of the presence or absence of load variations in a carriage driving mechanism (steps S123, S125).
