A human recognizing system and method for recognizing a human at a high speed and with a high accuracy by using the characteristics of MPEG data which is motion picture data. This human recognizing system for recognizing a human from a motion picture of the MPEG data format comprises MPEG data processing means for reading MPEG data and human recognizing means for extracting a moving block from a P-picture of the read MPEG data, for erasing a moving noise block which is a noise from the extracted moving block, for extracting the moving area by superposing at least one moving block, from which the moving noise block has been erased, for each picture, and for recognizing the human if the moving area and the next moving area superposed when compared. |
