A method of preparing a HHO hydrogen generator for use in winter operating conditions. The HHO hydrogen generator is of the type having a reaction cell with at least one anode plate and at least one cathode plate, in which electric current is passed through a distilled water-electrolyte solution to produce HHO gas. The method is characterized by a step of increasing a concentration of a given electrolyte in the distilled water-electrolyte solution until testing by an antifreeze tester confirms that the distilled water-electrolyte solution will not freeze at a selected temperature.
