<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a high-speed protection switching control without depending on the number of ports on the access line side. <P>SOLUTION: A transmission device and a channel switching method comprise: failure detection means 1 for detecting a link failure generated in a trunk circuit; APS management means 2 for managing an APS protocol state according to the APS protocol; switching control means 3 for executing switching control for a circuit. The failure detection means 1 transmits a failure detection message showing that a link failure is detected to the switching control means 3 when the link failure is detected without passing it through the APS management means 2.
