<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water intake device enabling an effective use of river water without exceeding a predetermined amount of water intake. <P>SOLUTION: The water intake device comprises: a water intake body 11 fixed to a water channel and having a passage in which the whole amount of water flowing through the water channel passes; a gate plate 12 which has a water shut-off part 12a in an upper portion of the gate plate for shutting off water and a water passing part 12b in a lower portion thereof for allowing water to pass when the gate plate stands upright and is swingably disposed in the water intake body 11; and a floating body 13 which is disposed on the gate plate 12 and allows the gate plate 12 to stand upright by buoyant force thereof. The floating body 13 is disposed in a manner so that the self-weight of the floating body 13 tilts the gate plate 12 when a water level of the water channel is at or lower than a normal water level La, and the buoyant force acted on the floating body 13 causes the gate plate 12 to stand upright when the water level is at or higher than a swelling water level Lb.
