Plate brick and manufacturing method therefor

Provided is a plate brick which has a long service life and which when used does not generate much smoke or gas having an irritating odor. The plate brick is made by adding an organic binder to a fire-retardant compound of raw materials comprising from 0.5 to 20 mass% of aluminum and/or aluminum alloy, mixing and then forming the result, and performing heat treatment at a temperature between 400°C and 1000°C. The plate brick is not subsequently impregnated with a carbon-containing liquid substance such as tar or pitch. The compressive strength is at least 180 MPa, and the weight increase percentage in a digestion trial by autoclave is 1% or less.
