An apparatus and a method for removal of ions from water. The apparatus is provided with a housing comprising a water inlet for letting water into the housing, a water outlet for letting water out of the housing, a first and a second electrode connected to a power supply for creating an electrical potential difference between the first and the second electrode and a spacer between the first and second electrode for allowing water to flow in between the first and second electrode. The apparatus is provided with a spacer between the first and second electrode (21, 22) for allowing water to flow in between the first and second electrode (21, 22), the spacer comprising a helical structure.
