PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce an aromatic compound and olefins at the same time.SOLUTION: The method for producing the aromatic compound and olefins includes a process to heat-treat a gas oil base together with steam to obtain the aromatic compound and the olefins, wherein the gas oil base contains at least one kind of gas oil fraction selected from the group consisting of a first gas oil fraction prepared by hydrodesulfurization or hydrocracking of reduced crude, a second gas oil fraction produced by hydrodesulfurization or hydrocracking of a distillate oil obtained by vacuum distillation of heavy gas oil and/or reduced crude and a third gas oil fraction obtained by hydrorefining of the second gas oil fraction, and both of initial boiling point and end point of the gas oil base are within the range of 140-400°C.
