In an Oxo synthesis at 200-450 DEG F. and 2500-3500 p.s.i.g there is simultaneously fed to the carbonylation zone a lower boiling olefine or olefines of 2 to 5 carbon atoms per mol. together with a higher boiling liquid olefine containing at least 6, preferably 7-20, carbon atoms per mol., the latter acting as a solvent for the lower boiling olefines, the lower and higher boiling olefines being in the reaction zone for the same length of time. Higher boiling olefines mentioned are a C12 polypropylene, a C7 fraction from propylene butylene polymerization and C12, C13 or C14 polymer olefines. Lower olefine mentioned are propylene, normal or isobutylenes and amylenes. Usual conditions of synthesis are observed and in an illustration a C12 polypropylene polymer cut of B.R. about 350-425 DEG F. containing 1-3 per cent of a cobalt soap together with propylene is treated with H2 and CO in a ratio of 0.5-2 mols. of H2 per vol. of CO at about 275-450 DEG F. and 2500-3500 p.s.i.g., the reaction products being passed to a catalyst removal zone where cobalt is deposited by treatment at about 200-400 DEG F. with stripping by H2 at 15-200 p.s.i.g. and the liquid products are hydrogenated at about 300-500 DEG F. and 2500-4500 p.s.i.g. in the presence of the usual catalyst to yield a mixture containing normal and isobutyl alcohols and C13 alcohols which are recovered by fractional distillation. Desirably 2-50 per cent of water is present in the primary reactor. In an example, propylene and isobutylene are treated in a heptene fraction from propylene butylene polymerization at 350 DEG F. and 2800 p.s.i.g. with a H2/CO volume ratio of 1/1 in the presence of cobalt oleate and water, the final hydrogenation occurring in the presence of a sulphactive molybdenum sulphide catalyst and water.
