PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a desired image density without any increase in assembling cost, concerning an image forming apparatus for controlling image formation conditions based on a toner deposit detected by an optical detector using an optical scanner. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: an optical scanning type exposure device 21 for exposing the surface of a charged photoreceptor 40; a developing device 61 for developing an electrostatic latent image on the photoreceptor 40 into a toner image; a toner image detecting sensor (P sensor) 310 for detecting the toner deposit of the toner image transferred from the photoreceptor 40 onto an intermediate transfer belt 10; and a potential control device 401 for controlling the toner image forming conditions based on the detected toner deposit. The potential control device obtains a sub-scanning beam pitch shift amount of the optical scanning type exposure device 21 and controls the output of the toner image detecting sensor (P sensor) 310 using a correction output value corrected, based on the sub-scanning beam pitch shift amount.
