PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and method for controlling a brake lamp excellent in safety and capable of avoiding and diagnosing a non-light mode of the brake lamp due to breaking of a lighting signal line, or the like. SOLUTION: The brake lamp control device includes: a brake pedal detection section 100 for generating and outputting a pedal on signal S1 that is a first lighting signal for lighting up the brake lamp 70 through the operation of a brake pedal 50; a brake lamp control section 200 for outputting a switch on signal S2 that is a second lighting signal for lighting up the brake lamp 70 based on an input signal; a sum signal generation section 300 for outputting a lamp on signal S3 that is a third lighting signal of the brake lamp 70, based on the pedal on signal S1 input from the brake pedal detection section 100, or the switch on signal S2 input from the brake lamp control section 200; and a lamp switch section 400 for performing switch control of lighting and lights-out of the brake lamp 70 based on the lamp on signal S3.
