<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a driving method for an image display apparatus, for optimizing an output signal to each sub-pixel and reliably increasing brightness. <P>SOLUTION: The image display apparatus includes: an image display panel having pixels arrayed in a two-dimensional matrix, each pixel comprising first, second, third and fourth sub-pixels; and a signal processing unit receiving an input signal and outputting an output signal. In the signal processing unit, a maximum value V<SB>max</SB>(S) of brightness is obtained with a saturation S as a variable in the HSV color space, which is expanded by adding the fourth color to the three primary colors; saturation S and brightness V(S) of a plurality of pixels are obtained based on the input signal values of sub-pixels in the plurality of pixels; and an expansion factor α<SB>0</SB>is determined in such a manner that the proportion of pixels having a value of expanded brightness, which is obtained from the product of brightness V(S) and an expansion factor α<SB>0</SB>, exceeding the maximum V<SB>max</SB>(S) with respect to the whole pixels is equal to or less than a predetermined value (β<SB>0</SB>). <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT |
