<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector capable of preventing an increase in the number of writing times of an accumulated lighting time into a non-volatile memory, in the case of repeatedly turning on/off a power source in a short time, and to provide a control method of the projector. <P>SOLUTION: The projector includes: a rewritable accumulated lighting time storage part 21 configured to store the accumulated lighting time of a lamp 11; a lighting time counting part 23 configured to count the lighting time of the lamp 11 every prescribed time, then, output an update signal to update the accumulated lighting time every prescribed time; a backup power source 23c configured to supply power to the lighting time counter 23a in the state where the power source is turned off; and a control part 20 configured to, when receiving the update signal, make the accumulated lighting time storage part 21 to store a value obtained by adding the predetermined time to the accumulated lighting time as a new accumulated lighting time.
