Disclosed are methods for the preparation of 1-chloro-4-(b-D-glucopyranos-1-yl)-2-(4-(R)-tetrahydrofuran-3-yloxy-benzyl)-benzene and 1-chloro-4-(b-D-glucopyranos-1-yl)-2-(4-(S)-tetrahydrofuran-3-yloxy-benzyl)-benzene (which relates to the general formula XXXIII) where R1 is tetrahydrofuran-3-yl); wherein the process involves the use of compounds of formula V, where X denotes a bromine atom or an iodine atom, and R1 is as defined above. Further disclosed is a process for the preparation of the compounds of formula V from the compounds (5-bromo-2-chloro-phenyl)-(4-fluoro-phenyl)-methanone or (5-iodo-2-chloro-phenyl)-(4-fluoro-phenyl)-methanone.
