PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance contrast of a logarithmic characteristic region in a linear/logarithmic image. SOLUTION: An illumination-component extractor (illumination component extraction section 4092) extracts an illumination component Log (L1) from a picked-up image (original image I) picked up by an image sensor having a photoelectric conversion characteristic which comprises a first region (linear characteristic region) outputting an electric signal which changes in a predetermined ratio to quantity of incident light, and a second region (logarithmic characteristic region) outputting an electric signal which changes to the quantity of incident light smaller than the first region. A reflectance component determiner (subtraction section 4095) determines a reflectance component Log (R1) according to the original image I and the illumination component Log (L1). A compressor (illumination component compression section 4093) then subjects at least the illumination component Log (L1) of the second region to DR compression, and image production means (image production section 4094) produces a new image (synthetic image O) according to the DR-compressed illumination component and the reflectance component.
