A method of treatment of gastrointestinal disease by administering polymeric antimicrobial comprising a derivative of poly(2-propenal, 2-propenoic acid) formed by reaction between a poly(2-propenal, 2-propenoic acid) and a polyalkylene glycol to form protected carbonyl groups. The invention also relates to an antimicrobal composition comprising said compound.
