A method and a controlling device (100) for controlling a temperature of a component such as a generator (101) of a wind turbine are disclosed. The controlling device comprises an input unit for defining a set point temperature (Tc,set) of the component of the wind turbine, a determining unit for determining the actual temperature (Tc) of the component; a comparing unit for comparing the defined set point temperature and the determined actual temperature, and a control unit for controlling the actual temperature of the component by controlling the output power (P) of the wind turbine based on the result of comparing the defined set point temperature and the determined actual temperature and by controlling a cooling power of a cooling system (103) by a cooling control signal. The cooling control signal is indicative of the actual temperature of the component and controlling the cooling power of the cooling system by the cooling control signal is carried out until a maximum cooling power is reached. Controlling the output power of the wind turbine is carried out if the cooling system is operated with a maximum cooling power (Qmax) and controlling the output power of the wind turbine is carried out when the actual temperature has differed to the set point temperature for a predefined time period.
