A process for the selection of finely divided aluminium oxides of high surface area suitable for the production of depot vaccines, comprises determining the take-up capacity of the said oxide for albumin and/or cephalin from ion-free aqueous solutions thereof, and selecting the oxide having a high take up of albamin and/or cephalin to prepare the vaccine; the take-up capacity being defined as the amount of substance in question taken up from a unit volume of solution by a unit weight of aluminium oxide and being at least 30% for albumin and 10% for cephalin. The take-up capacity for albumin, and cephalin are said to be in direct proportion to the capacity of the aluminium oxide to adsorb respectively, non-lipoid and lipoid type viruses, and thus afford a means of predetermining the utility of the said oxide for preparing an appropriate depot vaccine. Specifications 876,027 and 957,437 are referred to.
