The device (100) has a detecting device (120) for detecting driving condition of a motor vehicle (105). A processing device (110) determines energy utilization rate of the motor vehicle based on the detected driving condition. The processing device is designed to determine driving information with respect to driver operation characteristics with optimized energy utilization rate and to output the driving information to an output unit (130). The driving information is determined depending on an active operational principle of a drive system (165) of the motor vehicle. An independent claim is also included for a method for determining an energy utilization rate of a motor vehicle.
