<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve, for example, the stability of repeated operations, the stability of preserving high temperature/low temperature, the stability of a long term preservation and the reliability in a variable optical element which uses an electrowetting phenomenon. <P>SOLUTION: The variable optical element includes: first and second light transmissive members 10, 31; a liquid containing chamber 41 provided between the first and second light transmissive members; an insulating first liquid 11 contained in the liquid containing chamber 41; and a conductive second liquid 12 contained in the liquid containing chamber 41. Further, the variable optical element is composed by including a first electrode 22, a second electrode 32, a first insulating film 23 and a second insulating film 24. The second insulating film 24 is formed on the end surface on the second light transmissive member 31 side of side walls 21a, 21b which define the liquid containing chamber 41, and the surface of the second insulating film has affinity larger to the second liquid 12 than to the first liquid 11. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT |
