The method involves determining exhaust gas temperature in direction of flow of exhaust gas before a particulate filter (43) and a particulate mass stored in the filter are determined during basic mode of operation of an internal combustion engine (10). The filter with limited oxygen content in the exhaust gas is switched from the basic mode operation to a regeneration mode of operation when the exhaust gas temperature exceeds a predetermined temperature threshold value and the stored particulate mass exceeds a predetermined particulate mass threshold value. An independent claim is also included for a device for limiting temperature of a particulate filter in an exhaust gas duct of an internal combustion engine.
