At the time of operating an engine under high load, fuels for an initial slow combustion and a premixed combustion are injected into a combustion chamber by continuous fuel injections. After this, the fuel injections are once interrupted, and a fuel for a diffusion combustion is injected after lapse of a predetermined interval. Moreover, the fuel injection rate for the continuous fuel injections is augmented to a level higher than the fuel injection rate for the diffusion combustion. By the continuous fuel injections, a self-interference cooling action of spray is caused by the continuous fuel injections so that an ignition delay is promoted to augment a premixed combustion ratio to thereby suppress the generation of smoke. Accordingly, a much EGR can be performed to reduce the emission of NOx. |
